 Re: TV Shows: Whatcha Watchin'?
While we're basically on the subject of BBC shows, has anyone other than me seen any of "Being Human" yet? The first series has already run its 6-episode course in the UK, but they've just started playing it on BBC America, and from what I've seen so far I rather enjoy it.
The concept sounds pretty silly at first (a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost live together and try to integrate themselves into the rest of humanity), but once you start watching the show, the premise turns out to be quite un-silly (although there are some jokes to lighten the mood). The characters and their struggles with their supernatural identities are really quite gripping, plus there are shocking plot twists galore! Anyone else have any thoughts?

 Re: TV Shows: Whatcha Watchin'?
I have, and I have seen several protest articles on the internet in much the same way that there was loads of protest when Tara died on Buffy. As much as these deaths sadden me (b/c I care about the characters in their entirety, not just b/c of their sexual orientations), I highly HIGHLY disagree that a character should be exempt from suffering/death b/c he/she is gay. If all the characters on a show are dying/suffering, then that should go for all, not just for the straight ones. It's like Joss Whedon once said: "The idea that a character should be exempt from death b/c she's gay offends me as much as the idea that I would kill her b/c she's gay." The gay community took Tara's death very hard, and lashed out against Joss, and I found myself very offended by the notion that storylines should be changed to accomodate any given community or that any community should be given a priviledged status. On Joss' shows (and on Torchwood), everyone dies; no one is exempt. That is true equality. If the show continues, I would not be shocked if Rhys is killed at some point, thus breaking up a heterosexual couple, and I couldn't begin to list the number of heterosexual couples that have been killed on Whedon's shows.
So, my insane rant aside (sorry, this has been building inside me ever since Tara died YEARS ago), I loved you-know-who, just as I loved Tara, but I wouldn't sacrifice a great story/drama to bring them back.

It's one of those shows that could so very easily become a bunch of cliches, but manages to stay funny and interesting. The casting is ideal (though i would watch Aidan Turner read the phone book) and the plot twists only get better as the series goes on! Hope you are enjoying!

If a DVD comes out over here, I will definitely be buying it! I think what's really wonderful about the characters is that they're supernatural beings, and that's a pretty big part of them, but they're really just themselves when it comes right down to it. I also think the cast is perfect (I agree with you wholeheartedly about Aidan... he's just so... *drools a bit* *snaps self out of it*).

I'm sure there are some that think this is orientation related, I think most of the fans that are upset are because they liked the character so very much, and said character has been on the chopping block every single season. I think its also the fact that they have lost all their favorite characters in the last two season, and many didn't feel this one was necessary for the storyline. They make a big deal about no one being safe, and prove it by killing just about everyone. I'm mostly speculating here, but it seems more like this was just the straw that broke the camels back for alot of fans. Personally, I don't care about orientation in the least either way. Sorry, if this is harsh, but I didn't care when Tara died because I just never really liked the character. I'm disappointed about this one because all my favorite lines were by that character, and while it is entirely possible that those snappy lines will be given to someone else, its just lost a bit of its draw for me. Also, rant away, better here than on a random street corner, where they will decide you are a crazy person and lock you up.

Also, rant away, better here than on a random street corner, where they will decide you are a crazy person and lock you up. See, I think those reasons you cited (that he was your favorite character and that too many characters have died already) are perfectly valid reasons to be upset, even if I myself don't feel that way. I don't mind people who say "______ was my favorite" or "Now who is left?" What I mind are people like the guy in that article I quoted (and many like him) who state "___________ can't die b/c he/she is gay." I can totally see that the gay community would be upset to lose one of its few positive representations on tv. What I liked best about that couple was that it wasn't this cliched "I am going to be angsty b/c I'm gay and in the closet" story. Instead, this couple was incredibly playful and romantic and their relationship was beautiful, so I can totally understand mourning that loss, but I don't think the couple itself should be subject to different standards only because they're gay. If Torchwood comes back, you know that the surviving member of that couple is still going to be looking at men, just like Willow found another girl after Tara. Anyhoo, I will miss all these characters. They were wonderful and had great lines. It was really sad to see them go. Did you know there was also a huge controversy over the death of Jack's grandson? People are calling it violent porn, b/c he died onscreen. Children can't die onscreen? Children should be exempt or kept offscreen? That's another complaint that bugged me. I thought the death of that kid was the most brilliant thing in the whole series.

 Re: TV Shows: Whatcha Watchin'?
That's ridiculous, all he did was thrash around a bit and get a bloody nose, they've shown worse child related deaths on CSI, and they weren't sacrificed for the good of 10% of the population. It was created as an adult show, and the whole storyline was about children being used. If anything it should be more upsetting what happened to the children the 456 took that were still alive than Stephen's death.

 Re: TV Shows: Whatcha Watchin'?
I'm really curious to know what new shows or new movies everyone is watching right now.
I just recently got into Dexter and I love, love, love it! It was one of those shows that I always meant to watch and never got around to it, and now I'm hooked. I just have to get caught up with Season 4 and then I'll move onto a new series that's on my list. Any suggestions? I'm open to anything.
As for movies, I just saw Sherlock Holmes and thought it was very entertaining. Of course, that's because I'm such a fan of Robert Downey Jr., but I liked it. I was thinking of going to see Avatar because so many people have said it's fantastic. Has anyone seen it?

 Re: TV Shows: Whatcha Watchin'?
In regards to tv shows, I just recently bought Veronica Mars, which I highly recommend, if you haven't seen it. I loved BBC's Ashes to Ashes, and now I'm catching up with Life on Mars (UK version, not the American abomination). I absolutely adored Dollhouse, which is ending soon. I want to watch Dexter and Mad Men, which I hear are great. Also, I'm gearing up for Caprica, the prequel series to the awesome Battlestar Galactica.
On the movie side, I want to see Sherlock Holmes, since I've been obsessed with both the character and the actor playing him for my entire life. I've no interest in Avatar, so I couldn't tell you whether it was any good.

 Re: TV Shows: Whatcha Watchin'?
Like Diana I was also into Dollhouse, but since I've been extremely busy with school and work this past semester and because the show was being cancelled anyway, I'm just going to wait to buy the season 2 DVD and watch it then. I also can't wait for Caprica to get into full swing. The extended pilot is on Hulu so if you want to check it out you can on there, I don't think you need to know the BSG background to understand this but it helps. And if you haven't watched Battlestar Galactica then go netflix the seasons because that was an awesome show! My two biggies that I'm gearing up for this coming spring are the final seasons of LOST and The Tudors. I've been a fan of both shows since the beginning and, especially with LOST, I'm excited to see how it's finally gonna end.
As far as movies, Sherlock Holmes was actually my last new movie I saw last year. I really enjoyed it; Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law are of course excellent. And unlike some critics I found the combination of the Sherlock Holmes universe as seen through the eyes of Guy Ritchie to be a very nice paring, much like the characters of Holmes and Watson themselves. My only complaint was that the plot/action happened from the first scene and kept going from there so you never get a good grip on who these people are and their relationships with one another. I felt it could have lingered to show some of this characterization but since this will now be a franchise, they're making a sequel, maybe they will do that in later films. It's definitely worth catching though.
Avatar I really have no interest seeing, unless somebody paid for my ticket. I have a curiosity about it but not enough to spend between $15-20 on a mediocre film in pretty packaging, which is what it is. Fanboys aside, everyone has been wowed by the effects but the story, acting, dialogue, etc leaves a lot to be desired. Diana and I were talking about this last week in that the movie became about the special effects instead of allowing the special effects to support the story/plot of the movie. I've heard from many people that the only way to really experience this movie is in IMAX 3D which makes me wonder how it's gonna do with home video sales in the coming months. So I'd say see it to be wowed by the special effects, which means paying big bucks for a ticket in IMAX 3D but don't really focus on the story because it's been done before and much better.
Movies I would highly recommend that are on DVD so you can rent them are District 9 and Moon. I rank Moon as one of my favorite films of the decade it was so good and District 9 far exceeded my expectations at what a typical sci-fi film is. I recommend both these films more than any currently in theaters right now.

Wow, some of the Oscar nominations were weird, to say the least.
Anyhoo, I wrote a couple of new tv-related blogs, so check 'em out, if you're interested!

 Re: TV Shows: Whatcha Watchin'?
Sorry to not get back to you sooner, but thank you Little-lotte and Diana for all the recommendations! A lot of shows you guys watch, I watch as well, so our tastes are very similar. You know, I will have to netflix Battlestar Galactica. I've heard nothing but excellent things about that show, but again, it's on my list of shows I want to watch but don't get around to it. But that is a show I constantly hear about, so that will be my next series!
As for movies, I never did go see Avatar, because you are absolutely right, the only comments I heard about it, was how beautiful it looked, not necessarily the storyline. Plus, I would rather spend my $15-20 bucks on something other than a movie. I know I sound like I'm cheap, but the storyline means more to me than all the pretty graphics. District 9 was my FAVORITE movie of the year. I know that sounds nuts, but for some reason, I just loved it! It was such a surprise, but had such an interesting story with so many undertones. I just can't say enough about this movie.
Anyway, I know this post is long overdue, but again, thanks for all the recommendations!

Anyway, I know this post is long overdue, but again, thanks for all the recommendations! That doesn't sound nuts at all. I think it was one of the worthiest Oscar nominees this year, unlike Avatar and Up in the Air. I really do encourage you to check out Galactica and Caprica (its prequel). I want to watch Mad Men still, and The Wire. One of my favorite movies that I've seen recently: Paranormal Activity. Also, Zombieland.
